Phillies Select Madison Stokes in the 10th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

As expected, the Phillies went with a college senior in round 10 in South Carolina 3B Madison Stokes. Stokes had a very pedestrian first 3 years of college, struggling both to hit and stay healthy. He did break out big time in 2018, hitting .342/.424/.609 for the Gamecocks with 11 doubles and 10 home runs. … Read more

Phillies Select Dominic Pipkin in the 9th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

As mentioned in the 8th round, the Phillies looked to be saving slot money for something, the best bet at the time was their 11th round pick (more on how this all works in the day’s recap). Instead the Phillies take their overslot guy now in HS RHP Dominic Pipkin. Pipkin has good size at … Read more

Phillies Select Seth Lancaster in the 8th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

The nature of the major league baseball draft is that draft slots force picks for money saved and not necessarily talent. The caveat is college seniors with no leverage, but high performance will sign for below slot while giving a team a chance at a player with actual tools (the moral part of all of … Read more

Phillies Select Gabriel Cotto in the 7th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

Sometimes during the draft the guys on the broadcast don’t have anything on a player, and the Phillies 8th round pick of LHP Gabriel Cotto out of the Puerto Rico BB Academy left them stumped. It is easy to see why the Phillies like him. Jonathan Mayo eventually got a report that Cotto is a … Read more

Phillies Select Logan Simmons in the 6th Round of the 2018 Draft

May 7, 2019June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

After saying they were going to go with college pitchers on Day 2, the Phillies have taken their second hitter in 3 picks. (Kendall) Logan Simmons (he has been listed at both names aroudn the internet) is a high school shortstop out of Georgia. Simmons has good size at 6’3″ 190lbs, and the frame to … Read more

Phillies Select Matt Vierling in the 5th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

In the 5th round the Phillies took Notre Dame center fielder Matt Vierling. Vierling has pitched a bit, but the Phillies had him listed as an outfielder. Vierling put up some decent numbers this year with a .310/.402/.505 line, but he sacrificed some power (19 XBHs in 2018, after 31 in 2017) while striking out … Read more

Phillies Select Colton Eastman in the 4th Round of the 2018 Draft

June 5, 2018June 5, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

With their second pick of the draft after sitting out the second and third rounds (due to signing Jake Arrieta and Carlos Santana), the Phillies took RHP Colton Eastman. Eastman will join fellow Fullerton alumni Connor Seabold and Thomas Eshelman in the Phillies system. Eastman has good size, but the past two years he has … Read more

Draft Philes 2018: Bohm’s Away

June 5, 2018 by Jeff Israel

In what maybe likely there final top 10 pick for a while and not owning a second and third round pick, the Phillies needed to get this one right. There were a number of options they could have went and really any choice they chose from my top five on my big board would have … Read more

Phillies Select Alec Bohm in the First Round of the 2018 Draft

June 4, 2018 by Matt Winkelman

As was expected for the last month the Phillies selected Wichita State 3B Alec Bohm after Casey Mize and Joey Bart went 1 and 2. Bohm is widely considered the best bat in the draft. The biggest concern around Bohm is his ability to stick at third base. He has improved over the years, but … Read more
