With their second round pick (#64 overall) the Phillies selected Missouri State OF Caden Bogenpohl.
It is sort of a classic Phillies draft pick in that there are real tools and upside, but in a way that they have never really developed. He is a massive human being, listed at 6’6″ 245lbs who is a good athlete. As a freshman, he struck out a high rate but hit 20 home runs breaking Ryan Howard’s Missouri State freshman home run record. He then hit 13 home runs as a sophomore and just 6 home runs and 17 extra base hits as a junior. He hits the ball extremely hard, with reports indicating plus to plus plus raw power, but as he has progressed he has just pounded the ball into the ground. He has good plate discipline at the plate, but there are real worries about his swing and where he can hit the ball to actually do damage. If a team could make actual adjustments to his swing and approach he has enormous offensive upside, that is just not a thing the Phillies have actually done with a hitter despite taking that type of bat multiple times.
If a team unlocks the bat there is plenty of other upside because he isn’t unathletic or a statue. He played center field in college, with some reports indicating he good stick there, but good right fielder is well in his outcome range.
There is middle of the lineup left handed hitting power upside here, but are the Phillies actually the team that can bring that out of him.
