MLB Scheduled day 2 of the draft to cover rounds 5 to 20. It did so opposite the Futures Game and MLB games. It also removes the clean break between picks with slots and those without, so a reminder any pick in round 11 to 20 costs the bonus amount minus $150,000. I would expect the Phillies to take one large likely unsignable pick just in case something breaks down with Tyler Spangler so they have a place to put that money.
This post will be updated periodically with analysis as the second day of the draft unfolds.
Round 5: Will Gasparino, OF, UCLA
Gasparino is the second 6’6″ outlier athlete the Phillies have taken after Bogenpohl. He has plus plus to elite raw power, and unlike Bogenpohl he actually hit it out of the park. He does have a large amount of swing and miss and chase, which will limit how much contact he actually makes. There is a chance the hit tool collapses and he never makes enough contact to make it through the upper minors. Gasparino has a chance to stick in center field despite his size.
