Mock Drafts:

  • Fangraphs (Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel)
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (6/1/18)
      • Less likely alternate scenario: Casey Mize, RHP, AuburnIf we were Philly, we’d be trying to figure out a way to get Mize here because of how well he fits the hastening competitive timeline, as it’s possible he could be in a rotation as early as next year. Our rankings have the gap between Bohm (93rd on the updated top 100) and Mize (33rd) as pretty large, especially when considering the bonuses for Philly wouldn’t be anywhere near as large as the gap in talent. The way this would happen would involve Detroit blinking at Mize’s price, which we (again, if we were the Phillies) could inflate by letting Mize’s camp know we’ve got an over-slot bonus waiting for him at the third pick. If Detroit is very conscious of the money left for their next pick, this could become a larger factor, though we’re told they still prefer Mize to Bart if money is no factor. It’s possible somewhere in the mid-$7 millions could do this, and Philly could make this work by going way under slot later (maybe a few times) by paying a $100,000 bonus at their next pick, in the 4th round, to a senior.Philadelphia doesn’t have a bunch of comp or second-round picks that they need money to sign, so mortgaging part of the rest of their draft to take Mize and a bunch of college performers makes sense if you love Mize and his fit with your young club. In short, we think Philadelphia has incentive to try to move on Mize, and we’re hearing that if Mize doesn’t go first, this is where he will land. The buzz is that Mize’s camp is driving a hard bargain without real interest at pick No. 2, so this makes perfect sense given all the information we have, but there isn’t evidence the Phillies are actively trying to make this happen behind the scenes. If Mize isn’t there, we’re told Bohm will be the pick, which is still overwhelmingly the most likely thing to happen. It’s worth noting that Bart may be the Phillies’ second-ranked player, but he won’t get to this pick in any scenario. One reason why we think Mize still goes first is that Bart’s fallback to going pick No. 1 is that he goes pick No. 2, so his price should be full slot at the 2nd pick and thus not much lower than Mize’s price. Detroit would bite the slightly larger-than-expected financial bullet and take Mize, whom they prefer to Bart.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (5/15/18)
      • We think they’re zeroed in on Bohm, rolling deep at most of his games, with Madrigal and Swaggerty as backup options. They’ve also scouted Arizona prep lefty Matthew Liberatore heavily enough that he’s worth a mention here, but it would be a surprise this early.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (4/19/18)
      • Multiple heavy hitters in the Phillies org have gone to see Bohm, Madrigal, and South Alabama CF Travis Swaggerty, according to sources, and this pick likely comes down to one of those players. Our best intel is that they club ranks those three as follows: Bohm, Madrigal, Swaggerty. Not every source agrees about that, though, and it’s unlikely the Phillies have made a call on it yet. Due to their spring-training home, the Phillies had GM Matt Klentak and multiple high-level scouts in to see South Florida LHP Shane McClanahan and Stetson RHP Logan Gilbert in March, but they don’t appear to be real options here.
  • Baseball America
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (MLB Mock Draft 6/4/18)
      • The Phillies are still considering Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm, but Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal’s name has been floating around this pick more heavily in recent days. If Mize doesn’t go No. 1, this figures to be the furthest that he will fall. Brady Singer is a third option.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (MLB Mock Draft 6/1/18)
      • It sounds like the Phillies are less set on Wichita State infielder Alec Bohm than they were a few weeks ago. Nick Madrigal’s name has been mentioned here more recently with the team’s third pick, but Philadelphia’s analytically-inclined staff still seems to prefer Bohm. Florida righthander Brady Singer could be in play this high as well. If Bohm doesn’t go here, it’s not out of the question that he falls to the Athletics at No. 9.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (MLB Mock Draft 5/18/18)
      • This pick is big for the Phillies. None of their recent top 10 picks—Adam Haseley, Mickey Moniak and Cornelius Randolph—looks like an impact big leaguer at this point. Philadelphia’s second selection comes more than 100 picks deeper into the draft. It sounds like the team is settling on Bohm, who has significantly more impact than their previous recent selections, shares some similarities with Rhys Hoskins as a corner infielder with power and patience and also fits into one of the most successful demographics in the draft as a college third baseman. There are questions about his defense, but the Phillies are drafting his bat. Going after Florida righthander Brady Singer makes some sense here as well. Singer shares a number of qualities with current staff ace Aaron Nola, whom the team drafted with the 7th pick in 2014.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (MLB Mock Draft 5/8/18)
      • Philadelphia has selected a few players with questionable impact potential at the top of the draft in recent years, and while there’s still time for 2016 No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak to figure things out, there’s a lot of pressure on the Phillies here at No. 3. They don’t select again until the fourth round, so why not take a bat with tons of power at one of the safest draft demographics there is?
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (MLB Mock Draft 1-15 4/27/18)
      • The Phillies have an even bigger conundrum than the Tigers. The Phillies have the third pick, but don’t pick again until the fourth round with the 107th selection. Their draft is largely tied to getting it right with their first round pick, although if they can save some money here, they could use that money to spend a little above slot in the fourth through 10th rounds while many other teams are drafting a lot of senior signs.
After drafting hit-first outfielders three years in a row—none of whom currently rank in Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects—we can safely expect Philadelphia to go in a different direction this year. The track record for college third baseman taken in the top 10 picks is nearly impeccable over the past 20 years, and Alec Bohm is considered by most evaluators as a worthy top 10 pick.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (MLB Mock Draft 1-10 – 4/3/18)
      • The last three years with scouting director Johnny Almaraz at the helm, the Phillies have gone hitter heavy. Despite his size, there’s no better college bat than Nick Madrigal. Many scouts don’t believe his injury will cause him to fall too far thanks to an extensive track record and a quick developmental path to pro ball. South Alabama outfielder Travis Swaggerty might be intriguing here as well, and the Phillies have taken two contact-oriented lefthanded hitting center fielders with the past two years in Adam Haseley (2017, No. 8) and Mickey Moniak (2016, No. 1). Still, Swaggerty seems high at No. 3 even with a loud start to the season. The Phillies train in Clearwater, so they’ve probably seen a good amount of McClanahan as well.
  • ESPN (Keith Law)
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State  (Keith Law’s 2018 Mock Draft 4.1)
    • Casey Mize, RHP, Auburn (Keith Law’s 2018 Mock Draft 4.0 – 6/4/18)
      • They’re looking at about a half-dozen names, which I think include Bart, Bohm and Madrigal. If Mize gets here at all, it’s not a lock they take him, but since they don’t pick again until the fourth round, it would make sense to commit full-slot to the best player available.
    • Joey Bart, C, Georgia Tech (Keith Law’s 2018 Mock Draft 3.0 – 5/31/18)
      • I think the Phils would be thrilled to get Bart, one of the safest big leaguers in the draft, at this pick. Behind Jorge Alfaro, their big league catcher with an 80 arm and a 2.6 percent unintentional walk rate, their system is very light on catching. They’ve also been linked to Mize and Alec Bohm, and to a lesser extent to Madrigal.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (Keith Law’s 2018 Mock Draft 2.0 – 5/17/18)
      • It sounds like this is probably Bohm or Bart. I’ve heard Madrigal and Travis Swaggerty are out here.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (Keith Law’s 2018 Mock Draft 1.0 – 5/2/18)
      • I’ve heard they’re primarily interested in college bats, including Bohm and Bart — but not Nick Madrigal.
  • Perfect Game
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (2018 MLB Mock Draft Version 4 – 6/4/2018)
      • The Phillies would likely take Casey Mize if he were here, but we’re staying with him at 1:1 so that means it will likely be Bohm here, unless San Francisco surprises some people. Nick Madrigal is at least peripherally in play here as well.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (2018 MLB Mock Draft Version 3 – 5/24/2018)
      • The Phillies have seemingly focused in on college hitters, and after Joey Bart, Bohm and Oregon State infielder Nick Madrigal are the next most likely options. Bohm has done nothing but rake this season with big power and surprising athleticism.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (2018 MLB Mock Draft Version 2 – 5/10/2018)
      • Bohm has been consistent performer all spring and has steadily edged up lists as a result. As long as the Phillies are confident that Bohm can handle third base long term, his middle-of-the-order bat would be another great addition to the Phillies fast-track rebuilding plan.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (2018 MLB Mock Draft Version 1 – 4/20/18)
      • The best position player in the class is Oregon State infielder Nick Madrigal. The size is somewhat of a negative but he makes up for it with elite baseball instincts and feel to go along with several other impressive tools, such as his hit and run tools.
  • MLB Pipeline
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (Mock Draft: Who goes in 1st round tonight? – 6/4/18 – Mayo)
      • The Phillies would have interest in either of the top two, and all the talk has been about college bats if Mize is gone, with Madrigal and Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm the prime candidates.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (Mock Draft: Who goes in 1st round tonight? – 6/4/18 – Callis)
      • Barring a surprise with the first two selections, Philadelphia will decide between Madrigal and Bohm.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (Mock draft: 4 days out, here’s how 1st round looks – 5/30/18 – Mayo)
      • For a while, Bohm was THE name attached to the Phillies. While they haven’t moved on from him entirely, there is buzz that it’s far from a sure thing, with Madrigal the likely college bat alternative and Singer being a good choice in terms of a college performer on the mound. This is also the first spot where Stetson right-hander Logan Gilbert’s name comes up.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (Mock Draft: Callis makes picks for entire 1st round – 5/25/18)
      • All of the teams in the top four are doing their due diligence on Bohm, the consensus best college position player in terms of hitting for both average and power. Philadelphia almost certainly will take a college performer, with Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal and Singer the other leading candidates.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (Mock Draft: Mize not a slam dunk at No. 1 – Jonathan Mayo – 5/18/18)
      • College bats have been associated with the Phillies all along, and the powerful Bohm, even if he eventually moves to first, has been in the Top 5 discussion all spring.
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (Mock Draft: Callis makes picks for entire 1st round – 5/11/18)
      • A year after taking a college performer at No. 8 in Adam Haseley, Philadelphia is focusing on the same phylum. Bohm is the front-runner, with Bart, Florida 3B Jonathan India, Oregon State 2B Nick Madrigal and South Alabama OF Travis Swaggerty also in consideration.
    • Nick Madrigal, 2B, Oregon State (Projections for all 30 first-round Draft picks – 4/30/18)
      • Madrigal won’t be for everyone as an undersized middle infielder who could be best-suited to play second, one who missed a good amount of time this year with a broken wrist. But he has a track record of flat-out raking, and came back from his injury swinging the bat well. There are other college bats to consider here, including Bohm and Swaggerty. Mize and Singer, obviously, would be of interest here as well.
  • 2080
    • Alec Bohm, 3B, Wichita State (2018 MLB MOCK DRAFT: FIRST RUN (SHADOW))
      • Breakdown: With the Phillies making the transition from rebuild to competitor in NL East, Bohm makes a lot of sense as a plus-power corner stick with a track record with wood (.351/.399/.513 last summer on the Cape). It’s a profile somewhat lacking in the current Phillies system and Bohm should be athletic enough to handle third long term. –NF
Also considered: Travis Swaggerty (OF, Univ. of South Alabama); Carter Stewart (RHP, Eau Gallie (Fla.))
