Near End of Season Phillies Prospect Rankings

For the last few years I have maintained a private monthly prospect ranking because it gives a good continuation and snap in time. It helps prevent snap judgements and makes the ebbs and flows of the season come into focus. For the most part there isn’t a point in publishing them because they are an everchanging snapshot, and I don’t want to write a bunch of writeups. However, with some graduations and interesting performances, I thought it might be interesting to pull back the curtain a little bit to show where the process is. There is still 1.5 to 3.5 weeks of the season left (depending on AAA or not) and there is the AFL. The offseason list will include a lot more research and conversations, so the rankings are going to change, and possibly change dramatically as more information is parsed. But here is where not even the first draft of the top 50 sits (and it will almost certainly be different in 24 hours), with some commentary afterwards.

Some thoughts

  • Rafael Marchan, Nick Maton, and Bailey Falter all graduated on service time, all would be top 15 prospects
  • Francisco Morales is probably going to fall some more because he is probably a reliever, but that also was built in to the original ranking and given injuries to Garcia and Miller behind him and the risk of the outfield group, it felt like dropping him below that group was premature, even if he is a reliever long term.
  • I am not entirely comfortable with the McGarry ranking, but I talked to some people today and he went from 15 to 8 as I started because the stuff is good, I just am not 100% feeling great yet.
  • Rickardo Perez just keeps floating up on the back of having a good DSL season while being a highly regarded prospect.
  • I actually moved some relievers into the 31-50 range
  • I had to squeeze on Felix Reyes and Hao Yu Lee onto the list because their exit velocity numbers intrigue me. Same with Freylin Minyety who has just scorched the ball.
  • The 28-52 range already feels like it is in the wrong order.
  • Daniel Brito is on the list and I don’t know if he will play baseball again, but I really hope he does.

  1. How much does the uncertainty around Brito affect his ranking? I thought he was one of the brightest spots of the season before his medical trouble. Hope things work out for him and he can continue his career.

    • Agree, but depending upon what his diagnosis actually was and whether the pathology or the surgery caused any permanent damage, he may or may not ever play again. Even if he does return to the field, it will not be clear for a while whether he is still capable of playing at the level that he was playing prior to the injury (I am presuming it was a Berry Aneurysm based on the reported symptoms).

    • It is entirely driving the ranking, and I thought about not ranking him at all. He may not play again. If this had been a season ending, but not career threatening injury he probably would have dropped from 20 (his midseason rank) a few spots. If he had been healthy and just ok, he might have been a top 15 prospect.
