Summary: Renteria is the highest upside hitter the Phillies have had in the system in a long time. He is tall and athletic, and already is getting to plus power with plenty of room to fill out. He is an at least plus runner right now, who will likely end up right on the line between center and right field depending on how much he slows down and if he can improve his instincts. He does have some contact issues, including some swing and miss and ground ball tendencies, that he will need to improve to be a star.
Trade Deadline: The Phillies won’t make Renteria untouchable, but they should value him beyond his current fringe top 100 rankings. He represents their best hitting prospect in a very long time. Given that his value should continue to increase as he moves stateside, trading him now should only be done if it is part of a deal to bring back a young controllable hitter that will be part of the core alongside Sanchez and Luzardo for the next 4+ years.

The Phillies top international signing hasn’t done anything in 6 games that makes your jaw drop. He has a hit in every game, and Monday was the first time he didn’t reach base twice in a game. He has hit the ball hard, but even his three triples have not been eye popping exit velocities. He hit a ball 109 mph, but it was right into the ground. That all being said, he has been a dynamic athlete, as evidenced by his three triples and three stolen bases. He has swung and missed at times, but also his approach is solid at the plate. The first test of any new signing whether it is an international player or new draftee is if they show up and look as advertised in game action, and Renteria has looked the part and you can see why the Phillies gave him the bonus they did.
Renteria received the largest signing bonus to an international player the Phillies have given out in a long time and it came with the amount of hype befitting that type of outlay. There are nits to pick, he has a good approach but can get beat with spin and can take some wild swings. This has resulted in more ground balls than you would like given he has shown plus raw power when he actually drives the ball in the air. His home park is hurting his power some, but just elevating the ball more would help more in the long run. His defense in center field has been mostly fine, and while he is a plus to plus plus runner his future defensive home depends on how his body will fill out as he matures. Renteria also is a high energy player, hustling on the base paths, and an aggressive base stealer. He has star level upside, and he is going to be critiqued against that ceiling as he ascends on a long journey through the minors.
