Phillies select Griff McGarry in the 5th Round of the 2021 Draft

The Phillies go for some possible money saving in the 5th round in Virginia RHP Griff McGarry.

McGarry is a 6’2″ 190 senior who pitched 4 years at Virginia as a starting pitcher. The 2021 season was a bit of a disaster until the playoffs. He has big time control issues, walking 42 in 43 innings this season, and has a 8.8 BB/9 over his 134 college innings. He does have big time bat missing ability with 69Ks in those 43 innings this season. His fastball sits 93-94 according to Baseball America, but he can reach back for more. He will reportedly show a plus slider and plus changeup on his best days, but they can be inconsistent. Everything here says relief role, but it also reads a lot like 2019 4th round pick Erik Miller.

This likely is a money saving pick because McGarry is a senior, but it likely isn’t a complete haircut down to low 5 digits because the stuff is decent.
