Sometimes during the draft the guys on the broadcast don’t have anything on a player, and the Phillies 8th round pick of LHP Gabriel Cotto out of the Puerto Rico BB Academy left them stumped. It is easy to see why the Phillies like him. Jonathan Mayo eventually got a report that Cotto is a projection lefty with inconsistent secondary pitches and command, but a fastball that touches 89-90.
Going beyond the scouting report, Cotto is 6’5″ 175lb left handed pitcher who just turned 18 in May. He is exactly the type of body and project the Phillies have had success in developing in their complex. This is a pick that might take 3-4 years before we see what Cotto may be. Given how far off the board Cotto was, there may be a small discount here, but I would not count on that with any teenager.
