Phillies select Ethan Wilson in the 2nd Round of the 2021 Draft

https://twitter.com/ewils5/status/1414695421058895881?s=20After going HS OFer in the first round the Phillies turned to the college ranks with South Alabama OFer Ethan Wilson.

Wilson was one of the best remaining players on the board. He had terrific freshman season in 2019m, hitting 17 HRs in 56 games, but his strikeout rate was just a disaster in 2020, before having a bit of a weird season in 2021. He sacrificed a good bit of power to cut his strikeout rate down to 8.3%. His swing isn’t the smoothest, but there is at least plus raw power, that plays below that currently, and his contact abilities and approach were impressive. There is certainly some risk, but he has the chance to have an impact bat…

…which he will need because he is probably left field only going forward. He isn’t a disaster out there, and he made some highlight plays in the postseason. He just is not the most fleet of foot anf the arm strength is below average. Overall it is a step out of the normal for the Phillies who spend a lot of their big picks and signings on players who project to play up the middle. Wilson represents a swing at a big time bat at some point in the future.
