Phillies Select Brett Schulze In the 7th Round of the 2019 Draft

The Phillies continue a bit of a weird trend into the middle of day 2. In the 7th round they go with another reliever, in a spot where teams often go with an arm that has a chance to start. Brett Schulze moved to the bullpen after his freshman year at Minnesota and saw his strikeouts take off as a junior (his ERA went up a run while the rest of his other numbers improved). He has better control than Schultz, and throws a little bit less hard. However, he sits 93-96 and can touch up to 98. He has a solid curveball, but he might need to make some improvements to it to make it a swing and miss pitch. Schulze profiles as a bit more than a middle reliever and should move fairly quickly.

The Phillies first 5 picks in the draft have been very near where they were expected to be taken, but Schulze came off the board a bit earlier, and looks more like a guy who goes early on day 3 for near the $125k pre-pool mark. There is a small chance that the Phillies are saving a tiny bit of money here to play with on Day 3, but Schulze could also be closer to slot.
