In the 9th round of the draft the Phillies went with a real project of a player in OF Avery Owusu-Asiedu out of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Avery has size and projectability at 6’4″ 230lbs, and despite being a 3 year junior just turned 20 in the middle of June. He blossomed into some power this year, hitting .293/.396/.590 on the season. That has slumped a bit with wood in the Northwoods League where he is hitting .238/.366/.345 with Lakeshore. Off of just walk and strikeout numbers along with his school, there are some approach and swing and miss issues, but improved on previous seasons. Looks like he has primarily played a corner outfield position, but he has shown some speed on the bases.
Overall, he is high risk, but in the 9th round that isn’t a problem.
Fun look at 6-4/230 OF Avery Owusu-Asiedu past 2 nights for @LS_Chinooks, told he could go on day 2 of #MLBDraft – obvious size but loose with a whippy bat, look at ease of contact in video (2-run single and a deep flyout to CF), big upside, had big spring for @SIUEBaseball pic.twitter.com/fXlE6XowUu
