The Phillies have started to reach into the high school pitching ranks, they are unlikely to sign everyone, but it gives them some options.
As always I will update when more info comes in.
Round 31: Danny Mayer, OF, University of the Pacific
Mayer became a starter in his junior year and hit 15 home runs and then followed that up with 12 this year. His power comes with a lot of swing and miss.
Round 32: Sati Santa Cruz, RHP, Central Arizona College
Santa Cruz is an arm strength play. He doesn’t have any control (14 walks in 13 innings) but his fastball is reportedly 94-96
Round 33: Benjamin Brown, RHP, Ward Melville HS
For the third straight year the Phillies take a starting pitcher from Long Island. I don’t have a listing on his stuff, but Brown is a 6’6″ 210lb high school righty which screams projection.
Round 34: Kyle Hurt, RHP, Torrey Pines HS
If Hurt doesn’t hurt his knee before the season he likely goes somewhere between the late first and second round. Pre-injury he was up to 95, after the injury he was 88-90. Baseball America has him with a future plus changeup, and he has a good curveball as well. He has a projectable frame so there may be more velocity than there was pre-injury. It will likely take a bonus commiserate with his pre-injury to have him not go to Southern California.
Round 35: Brian Morrell, RHP, Shoreham Wading River HS
The Phillies double dip in Long Island and take the player who has won the award for the best baseball player on Long Island the past two seasons. Morrell lacks the body of Brown, but it looks like he is already up to at least 92. The Phillies will have to buy him away from a Notre Dame commitment.
