A Critical Look at the Phillies Organization and Minor League Baseball
Matt Winkelman
It is not a deep revelation to say that a major problem for the Phillies has been drafting. Their record of ineptness is of public record, and the result are showing (or not showing) on the field for the Phillies. The worst moment was after the 2013 draft when it came out that the Phillies … Read more
The safe assumption is that major league baseball teams will sign their top 10 round picks. The loss of slot money for not signing a player gives teams strong incentive to agree to deals before drafting a player, and then not pissing off everyone involved for next year’s negotiations helps enforce all of the handshake … Read more
Day 3 of the draft is organized chaos. It isn’t all over the place it is one very quick beat of names and draft Ids and mad scramble for all of the rest of us to figure out who that kid is. The Phillies under Almaraz have typically gone pitcher heavy on day 3, and … Read more
The Phillies wrapped up their draft with a strong last 5 picks. No neoptism, just more JuCo and HS players to try and sign. Sorry it is all a bit thin, I will see what I can find. Draft Tracker Round 36: Joe Breaux, OF, McLennan CC “Joe Bro” went only a few picks before … Read more

Five more picks off the board as we continue on a pace of about 24 seconds per pick. The Phillies did get a little bit exciting for a couple of picks. Draft Tracker Round 21: Jakob Hernandez, LHP, University of Texas Arlington Hernandez is a big lefty (6’4″ 275lbs) who led all junior college pitchers … Read more
I mentioned earlier in the day that from about round 14 or 15 the Phillies would go on a run of mostly college arms. That run started in round 14 and only had a one player deviation along the way. The Phillies took some arm strength and projection guys, and some college performers along the … Read more
And we are off! Each round today is taking right about 10-12 minutes, so it is hard to keep up, but the day gets off with a bang for the Phillies. Because of the slot rules it is better take above slot players in Day 3 because you essentially get to write off $125,000 of … Read more
The 3rd day of the draft is where things get truly crazy. There is no time per pick, it is just a conference call with a constant stream of names and draft Ids. Each team will take 30 baseball players today and will probably only take about 6 hours. At some point the draft tracker … Read more
