Phillies Select Gabe Craig in the 5th Round of the 2025 Draft

The Phillies continued their college streak in the 5th round with Baylor RHP Gabe Craig. Craig is different than their first 4 picks in that he is a 6th year grad student who just turned 24 and is a pure reliever. This would indicate that this is a under slot deal on Craig’s $422,700 slot value, but probably not all the way down to $10,000.

Craig is a tall man, listed at 6’5″ 209lbs and was absolutely dominant this year after not really pitching over the rest of his college career. He appeared in 24 games, collecting 10 saves, and pitching 32 innings. He allowed no extra base hits and just 13 hits overall to go with a 0.56 ERA 3 walks and 51 strikeouts. Given his age and dominance he should be very quick moving through the system. His slider is his best pitch with MLB putting a 70 grade. His fastballs is more sinker shaped and will site mid 90s. He probably is not a late inning arm in the majors, but might be a 7th inning type guy.

What is interesting here is that this looks to be a big cost saving move and so far the Phillies have not taken any players that should be overslot.
