Phillies Select Rudy Rott In the 9th Round and McCarthy Tatum in the 10th Round of the 2019 Draft

The end of Day 2 of the draft is about college seniors who will sign for pennies (which is why these players should be paid more for their labor) in order to save money for Day 3. That means college performers that will come in and and provide value to a minor league team. In the case of the Phillies they take a pair of mashers.

9th round pick Rudy Rott is a bit small for a first baseman, but he is finishing up a career where he hit .337/.423/.553 in 993 college PAs. In 2019 he hit .377/.457/.634. He doesn’t strike out a ton, has some power, and really hits. He is unlikely to provide major league utility, but he probably will be a mainstay of the Williamsport lineup this year and Lakewood or Clearwater next year.

10th round pick McCarthy Tatum has much less track record, only getting consistent playing time as a redshirt senior. He absolutely mashed this year, hitting .353/.397/.601 for Fresno State. Not a lot of walks or strikeouts. He probably goes to the GCL to anchor one of the two teams.
