Mock Drafts:
- Baseball America
- Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV – 6/3/19
- It sounds like the Phillies are interested in a number of shortstops, including Clemson’s Logan Davidson and Alabama prep Gunnar Henderson. In this scenario, we have them taking perhaps the best college shortstop in the class in Stott, who’s also in play as high as No. 10.
- Greg Jones, SS, UNC Wilmington – 5/31/19
- The Phillies have been tied to a number of different players, including prep shortstop Gunnar Henderson, prep righthander Brennan Malone and all of the aforementioned college names that get mentioned around this range. One rumor we’ve heard lately is that the Phillies like Jones’ exciting toolset, and he’s finished the season strong enough to push himself into the middle of the first round. Still, some sources think this would be too rich. This should be the floor for Rutledge if he’s still on the board.
- George Kirby, RHP, Elon – 5/24/19
- It’s sounding more and more likely that Philadelphia doesn’t get a shot at Rutledge, although if he does make it to No. 14 he would likely be the pick. The Phillies are being linked heavily with Thompson and Kirby, and there have been some rumors that they are intrigued with Davidson as well.
- Brennan Malone, RHP, IMG Academy – Mock Draft 6 – 5/10/19
- We’re hearing pitchers to the Phillies, although, like every team in this range, they aren’t discriminating on the demographic they are bearing down on. With the top four college arms off the board, perhaps they go for Elon righthander George Kirby here, who is the best strike-thrower in the country. His name has been mentioned routinely in the teens, but the Phillies had several high-level decision makers in to see Malone recently, when he pitched well, touched 99 mph and held 96-97 mph deep into his outing.
- Jackson Rutledge, RHP, San Jacinto JC – Mock Draft 5 – 5/3/19
- Only three junior college pitchers have been picked higher than No. 14, and all of those pitchers (RHP Alex Fernandez, RHP Kevin Appier, Aaron Akin) were selected in the 80s and 90s. Rutledge won’t set an all-time record for the highest-selected juco arm, but he could beat the mark set by Phil Bickford (No. 18 in 2015) this century. Improved control and a refined slider have allowed Rutledge to put himself in first round consideration this spring.
- Logan Davidson, SS, Clemson – Mock Draft 4- 4/10/19
- Davidson is in the midst of his best offensive season at Clemson five weeks into the ACC season. Since conference play began against North Carolina on March 9, Davidson is 29-for-79 (.367) with five home runs, 13 walks and 13 strikeouts.
- Zach Thompson, LHP, Kentucky-Mock Draft 3 -3/21/19
- Thompson is sporting a 2.20 ERA over his first four starts and recently shutout Louisiana State over six innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. He’s performed well this season and fanned at least eight batters in each start while showcasing a plus fastball/curveball mix.
- Daniel Espino, RHP, Georgia Premier Academy (GA) – Mock Draft 1 – 12/20/18
- Why It Makes Sense: The counterpart to Malone in the prep pitching ranks for the 2019 class, Espino has louder current stuff, but it comes in a shorter frame with an arm action that scouts are less keen on. Still, Espino touched 100 mph this summer and is regularly in the upper 90s with life on his fastball. He also has a pair of breaking balls that have shown potential to be plus offerings with an elite lower half to drive his body off the mound and a balanced finish to his delivery.
- Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV – 6/3/19
- MLB Pipeline
- Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV – 6/3 – Draft day mock: All 34 first-round picks
- His name has been mentioned as high as the top 10, and he could still go there. If they wanted to go college arm, Elon’s George Kirby could be in the mix.
- Shae Langeliers, C, Baylor – Days ahead of the Draft, here’s our latest mock – 5/31
- This feels like the floor for Langeliers, with Tulane third baseman Kody Hoese and Morgan Academy (Selma, Ala.) shortstop Gunnar Henderson as backup plans.
- Alek Manoah, RHP, West Virginia – Mock Draft: Could Bobby Witt Jr. go No. 1? 5/24
- The Phillies could be in on any of the top college arms should they get here, including Thompson and Elon’s George Kirby. A high school bat like Brett Baty or Gunnar Henderson could also enter the conversation. And don’t rule out a prep pitcher like Matthew Allan.
- Gunnar Henderson, SS, Morgan Academy
- Like Paris, Henderson is another high school shortstop with serious helium, and Philadelphia repeatedly has sent top-level executives to see him. Jung and Kirby are considerations here and will be for most teams below until they come off the board.
- Shea Langeliers, C, Baylor – 5/9
- The Phillies have gone college hitter the last two years in the first round and they could have the chance to do so again with a number of advanced bats in this next tier. Langeliers can really catch and was starting to come on with the bat after dealing with a hamate injury.
- Josh Jung, 3B, Texas Tech – 5/3
- Though Jung hasn’t driven the ball as much as a junior as he did as a sophomore, he’s still one of the best offensive prospects in the college ranks and has a track record of production.
- Mock draft time! An early shot at 2019’s top picks – 12/6/18
- Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV – 6/3 – Draft day mock: All 34 first-round picks
- ESPN
- Hunter Bishop, OF, Arizona State – 6/3 – Keith Law’s 2019 MLB Mock Draft 3.0
- This feels low for Bishop, who was leading Division I in homers early and is still tied for sixth (fourth among major conferences). The Phillies are wide open; I’ve heard them linked to hitters and pitchers, college and high school guys, including Will Wilson, Brennan Malone, Brett Baty, Carroll and Gunnar Henderson.
- Kody Hoese, 3B, Tulane – 5/28 – Keith Law’s 2019 MLB mock draft 2.0
- I’ve heard Philly all over the place — Kirby, Carroll, Brennan Malone and Hoese, in particular, which is one player from each of the four major categories.
- Zack Thompson, LHP, Kentucky – 5/5 – Keith Law’s 2019 MLB Mock Draft 1.0
- Thompson has shown top-10-pick stuff this year, but after he missed a lot of 2017 with elbow soreness, he’s probably going in the 11-20 range. I’ve also heard the Phillies with Gunnar Henderson.
- Hunter Bishop, OF, Arizona State – 6/3 – Keith Law’s 2019 MLB Mock Draft 3.0
- Fangraphs
- Jackson Rutledge, RHP, San Jacinto JC – 6/3 – Mock Draft 4.0: The Morning Of
- Langeliers and Rutledge both have backstops here, Elon strike-thrower George Kirby’s range starts here, and we’ve also heard Carroll mentioned.
- George Kirby, RHP, Elon – 5/29 – Mock Draft 3.0 – Two Rounds
- Rutledge if he’s here. They may underslot Hoese. Alabama SS Gunnar Henderson is a dark horse.
- Josh Jung, 3B, Texas Tech – 5/14 – Mock Draft 2.0
- It sounds like this would be Rutledge’s floor, as he’s in play at most of the last half dozen picks. The Phillies have sent in heat multiple times to see Alabama prep SS Gunnar Henderson, who has a couple interested clubs in the teens, but is seen by most as a late first round type. Chicago-area prep RHP Quinn Priester is also of interest here.
- Jackson Rutledge, RHP, San Jacinto JC – 6/3 – Mock Draft 4.0: The Morning Of
- Perfect Game
- Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV – 6/3 – 2019 MLB Mock Draft Version 4
- Stott is No. 5 on our board and the Phillies have been linked to college players all spring. There’s a chance that the pick is Alabama prep infielder Gunnar Henderson with an underslot deal, however college prospects are the more likely pick with Stott being the best of them.
- Gunnar Henderson, SS, John T Morgan Academy (AL) – 2019 MLB Mock Draft Version 3
- Henderson is an athletic prospect who’s been steadily rising throughout the spring and the Phillies have been heavily scouting Henderson. With multiple front office and directors in to see him, Henderson is likely to be in play in the teens and the Phillies are enamored with him.
- Zack Thompson, LHP, Kentucky – 5/8 – 2019 MLB Mock Draft Version 2
- Once we get past Thompson the college pitching ranks get to be a little thin, so the Phillies would grab the top college arm available. Thompson has been healthy and dominant with his two-plus pitch combination this spring and will help bolster a system that is entering their championship window.
- Michael Busch, 1B, North Carolina – 4/24 – 2019 MLB Mock Draft Version 1
- GM Matt Klentak and the Phillies made it clear this past offseason that they were looking to win now and Busch fits that directive. An extremely polished hitter, Busch has the potential for a plus bat with plus game power and offers one of the most disciplined approaches in the class with nearly twice as many walks as strikeouts and he should be able to aid the big league club in a short period of time.
