Phillies Take Jack Zoellner In the 9th Round of the 2017 Draft

Welcome to the end of Day 2! The Phillies joined a run of senior players with University New Mexico third baseman Jack Zoellner. Zoellner is listed as a 1B by his team, but the Phillies announced him at third. Zoellner hit really well this year with a .368/.470/.663 line with 37 walks to 26 strikeouts. That is a huge reduction in strikeouts from earlier in his career. The broadcast mentioned his power as his calling card.

Zoellner is a college senior, and one well off the board, so he is almost certainly going to be underslot, allowing the Phillies to save some money to use elsewhere in the draft. Expect more of the same in the 10th round
