Undrafted FAs

  • Kipp Moore, IF/C, Murray State
  • Gunner Buhner, 2B, Lewis-Clark State
  • Carlos De La Cruz, OF
  • Austin O’Brien, IF

Mock Drafts

  • Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt – 2017 MLB Mock Draft: The First Ten – Baseball America – March 16
    • While Wright’s thrown hard enough, the projectable presumed next Commodores ace was off to a slow start (0-2, 5.40, 20 IP, 24 H, 24-6 K-BB ratio) due to spotty command, of both his fastball and his secondary stuff.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Mock Draft 2.0: Brendan McKay, Hunter Greene Lead a Still Wide-Open Draft – April 20
    • Philadelphia was cagey about its top pick last year, not closing on Mickey Moniak until late in the process. The Phillies’ focus has been on polished hitters with top picks in recent years, and no hitter has more polish than Pavin Smith, with twice as many home runs (10) as strikeouts (five).
  • Mock Draft: Twins grab McKay, Greene to Reds – MLB.com – May 2
    • Jeren Kendall, OF, Vanderbilt (Callis) – There’s talk that his swing-and-miss issues could drop him to the teens, but Kendall has the best all-around tools among college position players and a track record of performance, so this could be a steal.
    • Austin Beck, OF, North Davidson HS (Mayo) – Many expect Beck to be gone by here, but if he’s around, Philadelphia will strongly consider his upside versus the higher floors of the college bats available.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – MLB Mock Draft Version 1 – Perfect Game – May 10
  • Shane Baz, RHP, Concordia Lutheran HS – Mock Draft 1.0 – ESPN (Keith Law) – May 11
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – MLB Mock Draft 3.0 – Baseball America – May 18
    • Haseley’s teammate Pavin Smith remains the pick here. Smith’s relative struggles in ACC play (.288/.387/.423, 3 HR) may have cooled some of the analytical ardor for him, but his 31-8 BB-SO ratio overall makes up for it.

  • J.B. Bukauskas, RHP, North Carolina – Mock draft: Could Twins go Greene? – MLB.com (Jonathan Mayo) – May 18
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Mock Draft: Twins make Wright pick at No. 1 – MLB.com (Jim Callis) – May 26
    • Though Philadelphia has shown interest in Baz, it’s more likely to go the college route. The Phillies are paired more with bats (Smith, Haseley, Burger, Vanderbilt outfielder Jeren Kendall) than arms (Bukauskas, Florida righty Alex Faedo).
  • Alex Faedo, RHP, Florida – MLB Mock Draft 3.5 – Baseball America – May 26
    • The Phillies were bearing down on the college talent, particularly early in the class.
  • Austin Beck, OF, North Davidson HS – Mock Draft 2.0 – ESPN (Keith Law) – May 30
    • They’re in on more players than can possibly still be there at their pick; I’ve heard Haseley, Smith, Shane Baz, Beck, Griffin Canning and even David Peterson. I do think early rumors that they were focused on high school arms were false.
  • Adam Haseley, OF, Virginia – Mock draft: Wright, Greene go 1-2; Pearson’s stock soaring – MLB.com (Mayo)
    • The ceiling vs. floor debate rages on here, with Beck in one corner and a college performer like Hasely on the other. For now, the college guy wins.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Fangraphs’ 2017 Mock Draft – Fangrpahs (Eric Longenhagen) – June 5
    • Scouting director Johnny Almaraz and advisor/hitting genius Charlie Manuel were at the ACC Tournament and GM Matt Klentak has seen the UVA kids. I also think there’s a chance they cut a deal here to try to move Trevor Rogers back to their second pick, or they could just take Rogers here.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Round 1 forecast: MLB Draft starts Monday! – MLB.com (Callis) – June 9
    • It looks like a collegian for Philadelphia, more likely a hitter (Haseley, Smith, maybe Missouri State third baseman Jake Burger) than a pitcher (Florida right-hander Alex Faedo, UCLA righty Griffin Canning). If the Phillies want a high schooler, it could be Baz.
  • J.B. Bukauskas, RHP, North Carolina – MLB Mock Draft 4.0 – Baseball America – June 9
    • Will Philadelphia fans trust the process? It’s not just the 76ers who need to hit it big in the draft. The Phils are said to be off UVA’s other first-round bat, Pavin Smith, and are the highest potential spot for Bukauskas and Florida righthander Alex Faedo.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Mock Draft 3 – ESPN (Keith Law) – June 11
    • I think they’d take Royce Lewis if he got this far, and they’re still tied to high school arms Shane Baz and Trevor Rogers, as well as the college bat of Keston Hiura.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Draft-day Mock – MLB (Mayo) – June 12
    • If Smith goes above them, they could turn to Haseley. Smith reportedly had an impressive workout with the Phillies recently.
  • Adam Haseley, OF, Virginia – Draft-day Mock – MLB (Callis) – June 12
    • Philadelphia seems destined to wind up with a collegian, Smith or Haseley if it wants a bat or Florida right-hander Alex Faedo if it desires an arm. If the Phillies go the high school route, Texas right-hander Shane Baz is the leading contender.
  • Adam Haseley, OF, Virginia – MLB Mock Draft 4.5 – Baseball America – June 12
    • The Phillies are believed to be taking the best Wahoo available, either Haseley or first baseman Pavin Smith.
  • Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia – Fangraphs’ 2017 Mock Draft, Final Edition – Eric Longenhagen – June 12
  • Adam Haseley, OF, Virginia – Mock Draft Version 3 – Perfect Game – June 12
    • The industry is still holding firm on the Phillies loving both of the Virginia bats; and in this projection they get Haseley, who should be a stalwart in the outfield and at the top of the lineup for years to come. They are also known to be sniffing around Alex Faedo here.
