Phillies Select Sean Youngerman in the 4th Round of the 2025 Draft

The Phillies picked up on Day 2 where they left off on Day 1, taking college pitchers. This time it is RHP Sean Youngerman out of Oklahoma St.

Youngerman is young for a college junior (turned 21 last week), and spent his first two seasons at Westmont, first as a reliever and then a starter. He started in the Cape Code league last summer, with good success. However after transferring to Oklahoma St he mostly pitched out of the bullpen. Most evaluators think he is a starting pitcher. His fastball has run and ride, and looks to sit in the low to mid 90s and touching up to 98 out of the bullpen. He has a slider and a changeup, but they both will need work in pro ball. His strongest attribute might be his control. This year he walked 8 batters in 52 innings while putting up a 2.08 ERA.

I don’t know why Youngerman wasn’t a starter for Oklahoma St, but this feels like the Phillies taking a buy low opportunity on a guy that should be starting. He has a starter’s frame and control, and if they can bring out better secondary pitches he is an interesting arm.
