As mentioned in the 8th round, the Phillies looked to be saving slot money for something, the best bet at the time was their 11th round pick (more on how this all works in the day’s recap). Instead the Phillies take their overslot guy now in HS RHP Dominic Pipkin.
Pipkin has good size at 6’4″ 160lbs, with plenty of projection remaining. His stocked rocketed up when he was throwing 96 at the Area Code Games last summer. The velocity was down this spring with reports anywhere from 89-93, but there is no reason to think he can’t get back into the mid 90s. There is some disagreement about whether he throws a slider or curveball, but it has some potential. He has shown a changeup, but like most high schoolers he shows feel for it, but it needs work. Pipkin has a fine delivery, though it is a bit slow and deliberate.
What you are buying Pipkin is upside. His frame has a ton of growth left, he is athletic, and he has already flashed plus velocity. He does have a Cal commitment so it is going to be a chunk of money to sign him away from that and I expect the Phillies to take a senior $5,000-$10,000 sign in the 10th round to free up some more cash. The fact that the Phillies took him on Day 2 indicates that they know they can sign him and they wanted to take him before anyone else freed up the money for him.
