The Phillies closed out their Day 2 of the draft by returning to their roots with big school right handed pitcher with control issues in TCU’s Cam Brown.
Brown put up a 5.20 ERA this season in 16 games (12 starts), spanning 55.1 innings with 40 walks and 62 strikeouts. MLB Pipeline ranked him 191st and Baseball America did not have him in their top 500. Brown reportedly sits 93-97 (according MLB Pipeline) with a good slider. Looks like he struggles to repeat his delivery and was demoted to the bullpen. There is some bullpen upside, but a starter’s arsenal and frame. Continuing the theme of earlier picks he is someone the organization will need to work on repeating their delivery if they have any hope of making it past the low minors.
Interestingly, Brown is not a senior sign and might not be a slot sign either so the Phillies must like his arm enough to not go with a senior in the 10th.
Huge spin on this backdoor slider from Cam Brown, and it catches just enough of the plate for a big punchout to keep ORU off the board in the third.
