The Phillies are now into their take pitchers with problems phase with RHP Marcus Morgan from Iowa in the 9th round.
His ERA was good in 2023 (3.72) but it came with 51 walks in 65.1 innings. In 2024, it was a 7.45 ERA in 54.1 innings with 53 walks and 64 strikeouts. He is a project, and the type of project the Phillies have not been terrible at fixing some.
Morgan has good size, 6’3″ 210lbs, and comes from an athletic family and was a high school multi sport athlete. He doesn’t have enormous stuff, his fastball is more low 90s, but he got up to 99 in bullpen work. He already comes with the Phillies array of pitches with BA mentioning a cutter, sweeper, changeup, and curveball. He obviously is going to need to improve his control and consistency, but it is a low cost big impact swing.
