The hits just keep coming as the Phillies take Kansas catcher Kodey Shojinaga. Sojinaga is a draft eligible sophomore who started both years at Kansas.
Despite being announced as a catcher, he only caught one game last year and is a bit of a player without a position. Baseball America has him as a second baseman, and he played second, third, and first at Kansas with mixed opinions about his glove. He obviously has more upside as a catcher if the Phillies can somehow make it work.
Otherwise, he can hit. As a freshman he hit .378 and as a sophomore he hit .335. He walked (25) more than he struck out (22) this season. He had 6 home runs his first year and 5 this year, adding on 20 more doubles, but given the reports of below average power, that reads as line drives into the gaps.
A contact oriented catcher is an intriguing player, a contact oriented second baseman really will need to also be a solid defender, anywhere else and I don’t know how he makes it on the field. It is a “toolsy” pick it just happens to be the hit tool and not much else.
