With some injuries up in the top levels of the system, and some releases (Mike Nesseth) there was some reliever shuffling in the minor today. The Phillies promoted Reinier Roibal from Clearwater to Reading. Roibal was a Giants’ signing out of Cuba in 2010 who the Phillies signed as a minor league free agent this winter, he supposedly throws in the hhi-80s,low-90s without wipeout stuff. More interesting are the next two transactions where Canadian Jesen Therrien was promoted from Lakewood to Clearwater. Therrien has a fastball that sits in the low-90s and can reach 95 that he pairs with a sharp hard curveball. He struggled until mid-2014 to find control, but since a demotion to Williamsport, things have taken off and he breezed through Lakewood this year. He has a major league relief ceiling if he can keep it up. Filling in at Lakewood is sidearming reliever Manny Martinez who brings a fastball that can bring into the hi-90s (clocked up to 98) with a slider that can go from wipeout to unusable and control that can really disappear at times. In many ways he feels like a shorter right handed Jake Diekman, but after 3 years in Williamsport he has yet to put it all together.
