Thoughts:
- Both Jose Tavares and Ranger Suarez are stateside after dominating the DSL and VSL respectively, we should know more about their stuff when all is finished
- All four of the Phillies big money Latin signings are also stateside, joining them are the two top 2013 signings in Encarnacion and Martelo
- There is a heavy Latin theme to the roster which aligns with the sudden surge the Phillies have been making in signing Latin prospects, there is a ton of upside on the pitching side
- Not all players will be playing in games and going full speed, players like Nola, Imhof, and Crawford will be working on ancillary skills rather than putting more wear on their bodies
- Astudillo is looking for a defensive home, his prospect stock as a lot riding on fitting in somewhere other than 1B/DH
- Notable absences among young prospects include Lewis Alezones, Denton Keys, Carlos Tocci, and Jose Pujols all of who put in a full season of work and could use the rest, Tocci and the organization have stated that he will be on a training program aimed at getting larger
- Adam Morgan is not on the roster, but announced via Twitter that he will be throwing
- The AFL players will also likely be appearing in games leading up to the AFL season
Matt, do you think Tocci still projects as a major prospect. I realize he is still quite young and I have defended him on that premise over the last couple of years but I am starting to wonder if he will ever hit – is it still lack of strength? I’m also wondering about his speed which hasn’t translated at all into steals. I realize he might have just graduated from high school in the states but I guess I expected more progress this year? Am I being unrealistic?
He will be in my Top 10 prospects this offseason, so yes I think he is still a good prospect. It is still a strength things, but this year saw him keep walk and strikeout rates relatively stable while doubling his ISO and adding .040 points of BABIP due to harder contact. He is still a superb defender in center field as well, which will be his carrying skill. You are right it would be nice to see better results on stolen bases.
All this being said, this will be the first offseason the Phillies will have him on a regimented workout program. I wouldn’t give up on him.
