September Moves Crowd Already Muddy 40 Man Roster

The Phillies are in no position to pass up free talent. Nor are they in a position to be comfortable with the talent already on the roster. In the spirit of those two statements, this month the Phillies have added the following players to their 40 man roster in September: LHP Kevin Siegrist, SS J.P. Crawford, 2B Eliezer Alvarez, LHP Zac Curtis, RHP Victor Arano, and RHP Henderson Alvarez. To this point the Phillies have only removed Juan Nicasio and Brock Stassi from the roster, which has left the roster a bit packed heading into the offseason. We will have plenty of time to talk about the 40 man adds this offseason, but I thought it would be a good time to take a snapshot at the roster as we enter the offseason.

  • Pending Free Agents (4)
    • RHP Clay Buchholz
    • IF Andres Blanco
    • OF Hyun Soo Kim
    • OF Daniel Nava
  • Under Contract (1)
    • OF Odubel Herrera

    • LHP Kevin Siegrist
    • RHP Hector Neris
    • C Cameron Rupp

    • SS Freddy Galvis
    • 2B Cesar Hernandez
    • IF/OF Pedro Florimon

  • Pre Arb MLB
    • 3 Options (8)
      • LHP Hoby Milner
      • RHP Aaron Nola
      • RHP Yacksel Rios
      • RHP Jesen Therrien
      • C Andrew Knapp
      • SS J.P. Crawford
      • 1B Rhys Hoskins
      • RHP Victor Arano
    • 2 Options (11)

      • OF Nick Williams
    • 1 Option (5)
      • LHP Zac Curtis
      • RHP Edubray Ramos
      • 1B Tommy Joseph
      • OF Aaron Altherr
      • OF Roman Quinn
    • 0 Options (3)
      • LHP Adam Morgan
      • C Jorge Alfaro
      • IF Ty Kelly
  • Minors
    • 2 Options (5)
      • LHP Elniery Garcia
      • RHP Alberto Tirado
      • 2B Eliezer Alvarez
      • 2B Jesmuel Valentin
      • OF Dylan Cozens
    • 1 Option (1)
      • RHP Mark Appel

Now the Phillies will obviously waive some players under team control, but they have postured about Pedro Florimon and there has been speculation about Henderson Alvarez, both of whom the Phillies might not chuck aside. If Jesen Therrien does need Tommy John surgery, his spot is almost certainly forfeit.

  1. Matt – I like the Phils to add the following prospects. how do you see (probability in %) these prospects added to the 40-man?
    1) Kilome
    2) Dominguez
    3) Tocci
    4) Austin Davis
    5) Taveras

I can see some teams get a closer look at Leibrandt and Pullin but it’s probably 67% that both will not be selected in the Rule V.

Excluding the pending FA’s, the number will be 43. Kelly, Florimon and Siegrist and possible Curtis, Perkins and JDT will reduce the number to 37 – which should protect Kilome, Dominguez and Tocci.

ToJo is almost certain to be traded and the 2 Alvarez’s (Henderson and Eliezer) will be the wildcards. Personally, I prefer to trade ToJo and Tirado to clear 2 roster space for Davis and Taveras.

    • I highly doubt Pullin is on anyone’s Rule 5 radar. He didn’t hit at AAA, and he’s pretty much limited to LF. That’s not a guy you can easily carry on your bench all year long. Tocci also hasn’t hit above AA, but his speed and defense makes him a good candidate for someone’s 5th OF.

Kilome and Taveras I think would absolutely be taken (even if they ended up not sticking).
