Second Work Groups: Group 5 Emerges

Time to overanalyze another list of minor league players, it is time for work groups again.  This updated list comes from Baseball Betsy (visit her site, watch her videos, thank her for doing all of this).  We are still far from the final rosters but with the 5 groups we can start to see some movement, so that is all I am going to talk about today.

Workout Group 2 2016

  • The catching situation is going to see some cuts with Logan Moore and Gabriel Lino needing places to land, so watch the guys out of place right now
  • The AA outfield appears to still be in Group 1, so there is still some movement ahead and maybe a cut
  • Group 2 is full of guys who could make it to AA, but we don’t know yet.  There are a lot of light hitting infielders still in camp so it feels like Malquin Canelo and Scott Kingery will start in Clearwater
  • The releases during this cycle were Art Charles, Brian Pointer, Harold Guerrero, Ryne Frankoff, Kevin Walsh, Victor Delgado, and Tim Zier.  The cuts are going to be at all levels this year.  LHP Manny Chavez all disappeared, he has been pitching in Mexico for a few years now.
  • Deivi Grullon continues to be ahead of Edgar Cabral and Austin Bossart in the catching depth which is interesting, my prediction is Grullon and Bossart in Clearwater this year.

  1. Is there a list somewhere of who is in major league camp, and which if they don’t make the team are likely to be released instead of assigned to the minors? I think someone said there are 49 in major league camp. Is that pitching heavy? Not sure if that 49 counted injuries either.
