Pre Draft:

Colton Murray popped up in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2010 where he allowed just one run in 19 innings out of the bullpen. He showed a fastball with some life at 91-94, he mixed that with a slider. He is not a large guy and doesn’t offer the potential of a back of the bullpen reliever, but he could be a solid middle relief arm.

Scouting Report:

Fastball: Murray gets more plan on this pitch that you would expect from a little guy because the delivery is over the top. The pitch will sit 92-94 and touch up to 96 and it still has some movement to it as well. He isn’t pinpoint with the command, but he has good control with it in the zone.

Curveball: In pro-ball Colton Murray has morphed the slider of college into a curveball that fits the delivery better. He gets good downward movement on the pitch, and it has become a real weapon for him. He needs to learn to break it out of the zone more, but it already can generate swings and misses.

Changeup: Murray will mix a changeup that is somewhere between show me and average. It won’t be a primary offering for him, but he will be able to use the pitch to complement his fastball and curveball to keep hitters a little bit more off-balance.

Summary: Murray lacks the flash of Nefi Ogando or the name recognition of Seth Rosin, but he might be the best relief prospect to end the year in Reading. He had fluky stat year in 2013, and in 2014 he has just built on his success and gives you the hope he can have two plus pitches and put himself in a position to be a good middle reliever. He should start 2015 in Lehigh Valley and will need protecting this offseason from the Rule 5 draft.
