Phillies Take Jhordany Mezquita In the 8th Round of the 2017 Draft

Everyone ready to be confused?

In the 8th round of the draft the Phillies took 19 year old LHP Jhordany Mezquita with no school listed. He is 6’1″ and on the broadcast the Jim Callis said he was 91-94 with a loose arm.

Except what about this guy?

That birthdate is wrong per Phuture Phillies’ Jim Peyton

Apparently, recently signed free agent, LHP Jhordany Mezquita is only 19-years old, not 29 as his player page on the Phillies site indicates.  Thanks go out to Steve Potter who got the player’s correct age from Coach Alex Concepion.

So it is actually the same person, so what happened?

It appears the Phillies Dominican scouts liked him, and they may have agreed to a deal. But, it appears that Mezquita had moved to the states where he was now draft eligible. So the Phillies drafted him in the 8th round. He seems like an interesting arm and story. I like the pick, I love the story.
