Phillies Take Jake Scheiner In the 4th Round of the 2017 Draft

With their second pick of Day 2 them Phillies continue with the college route with University of Houston third baseman Jake Scheiner. Like their previous two picks, Scheiner is a bit off the board with him not in Baseball America’s Top 500 or any other list. There isn’t much information on him. He came out of nowhere as a JuCo transfer, but in his only year year at Houston he hit .346/.432/.667. Steve Givarz of Baseball Prospectus provided this report on him.

This is now three “overdrafts” in a row for the Phillies. Either they are off on where consensus or they are saving up some money to make a run at a player later in the draft

  1. Matt – I would think that the Phils will sign a >$500 prep in the middle round and probably a couple of >$100k signings in the later rounds.

Although it looks like an overreach, the 2.45, 3.83 and 4.113 are prototypical Almaraz prospects – pitchers with command and hitters that can hit.
