Phillies Take Cole Stobbe In the Third Round of the 2016 Draft

Day 2 opens with the Phillies having had a full night to regroup and figure out how much they have spent and what everything left will cost. With that money they went out and got Cole Stobbe a HS SS out of Nebraska.

Stobbe is considered a tough but not impossible sign, so he shouldn’t take up all the remaining money. Stobbe likely moves to third base where he has average tools across the board. Some people think there might be a bit more in the hit tool, but if there isn’t, it still works as an average regular.  Stobbe was a comp round or early second round talent according to some.

More to come later…

Update: Since the pick more has come in there has been more information coming out with the raw power being mentioned as high as plus. MLB Pipeline throws a .280 15-18 HR profile on him, which would be very solid in the third round. Fangraph/ESPN’s Eric Longenhagen expects him to sign for close to slot. I like the pick given the options available. He fills a hole in the org (third base) while giving them another bat with a solid hit tool. His upside is a first division regular.
