Phillies 2017 Draft Rounds 16-20

I mentioned earlier in the day that from about round 14 or 15 the Phillies would go on a run of mostly college arms. That run started in round 14 and only had a one player deviation along the way. The Phillies took some arm strength and projection guys, and some college performers along the way.

Round 16: Kyle Dohy, LHP, Cal Poly Pomona

I reached out to Baseball America’s Kyle Glaser about Dohy and this was his response.

Edit: Baseball America’s writeup

Dohy entered the year as one of the nation’s top Div. II prospects as an arm strength lefty who could sit 92 mph and had room to grow. Horrid control ruined his season, however, as he posted a 5.99 ERA with 6.8 walks per nine and threw 18 wild pitches. Dohy has swing-and-miss stuff, as evidenced by his 89 strikeouts in 79.2 innings, but his inability to command any of this offerings consistently largely cancels out his positives. A team could take a flyer on Dohy and see if they can iron him out.

Round 17: Austin Listi, OF, Dallas Baptist

Listi was a 5th year senior because he spent 2015 trying to be a Navy SEAL (he had a treatable medical condition that didn’t allow him to continue). Take his numbers with a grain of salt because of his age, but Listi just mashed this year hitting .336/.454/.735 this year with 23 doubles and 24 home runs in 63 games. He played 1B for DBU, but he should be able to play RF. He is certainly old for a draftee, but his power makes him interesting.

Round 18: Damon Jones, LHP, Washington St

Jones was a bleh starter at Washington St for two years, but he is massive at 6’5″ 225lbs and will almost certainly be a reliever in pro ball. He has had some command problems, but a move to the bullpen might unlock a bit more out of his arm.

Round 19: Addison Russ, RHP, Houston Baptist

Russ is a smallish righty who has put up two good years as a starter.

Round 20: Brady Schanuel, RHP, Parkland College

The Phillies take a break from 4 year college to take a JuCo arm in Schanuel. He is a University of Iowa commit and was drafted in the 36th round by the Athletics last year. H has a projectable 6’3″ 180lb frame.
