Phillies 2017 Draft Rounds 11-15

And we are off! Each round today is taking right about 10-12 minutes, so it is hard to keep up, but the day gets off with a bang for the Phillies. Because of the slot rules it is better take above slot players in Day 3 because you essentially get to write off $125,000 of their bonus as not counting against your pool. Beyond that, the team is not penalized if they are unable to come to a deal. This means round 11 is all about drafting a player that you talked to overnight that you think you can get done based on money available, and the Phillies got their day started off with a good one.

I will add more if more becomes available

Round 11: Jake Holmes, SS, Pinnacle HS

After going off the board all day yesterday, the Phillies get the kind of player fans were craving. Holmes is an athletic shortstop with an above average arm and plus speed. He has a projectable frame, and if he adds power most see him moving off short to third. He is probably a 4th or 5th round talent and if the Phillies are taking him at 11 they likely know they can sign him. His stock has been rising towards the end of the spring.

Round 12: David Parkinson, LHP, Ole Miss

There is some mixed opinions on Parkinson as MLB has a 5th round rank on him and he did not make Baseball America’s top 500. According to MLB, Parkinson might have 4 average pitches, with the slider a bit more. He looks like a back end starter, with a fallback as a fastball-slider LOOGY. He put up solid numbers in the SEC this year.

Round 13: Colby Fitch, C, Louisville

Normally this pick is a good glove college catcher, instead the Phillies get a bit of a project, here is what BP’s Steve Givarz had to say.

He may have improved some since that look, but right now he looks like a good bat, bad glove backup

Round 14: Zach Warren, LHP, Tennesse

Warren started for 3 years for the Volunteers and was not particularly good at it. This year he put up a 6.31 ERA with 29 walks and 34 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. There aren’t any current reports on his stuff, but he was a Top 100 college prospect for Baseball America coming into the year. He is listed at 6’5″ 200lbs so the Phillies may be buying low on a pitcher with some previous pedigree. Plus he is a local kid (from Vineland).

Round 15: Alex Garcia, RHP, UC Santa Barbara

This one is interesting because he only pitched 29 total innings in college, including only 7.2 horrible innings this year. He is young for a college junior. Per D1 Baseball’s Shotgun Spratling he was up to 94 as a reliever in 2015 (and reportedly has touched up to 96). This year D1’s Aaron Fitt hinted at big stuff for Garcia. It will be interesting to see how hard he actually throws.
