Baseball America With 1st Offseason Top 10 List

It is ranking season. Baseball America kicked things off with their Phillies Top 10 today. Here is Ben Badler’s List:

  1. J.P. Crawford
  2. Sixto Sanchez
  3. Scott Kingery
  4. Adonis Medina
  5. Adam Haseley
  6. JoJo Romero
  7. Jhailyn Ortiz
  8. Jorge Alfaro
  9. Mickey Moniak
  10. Franklyn Kilome

Before talking order, here is Ben’s midseason list (with the Top 100 rank from BA as a whole)

  1. Mickey Moniak (46)
  2. Sixto Sanchez (47)
  3. Scott Kingery (52)
  4. Rhys Hoksins (69)
  5. Jorge Alfaro (81)
  6. J.P. Crawford (92)
  7. Adam Haseley (98)
  8. Nick Williams
  9. Adonis Medina
  10. Franklyn Kilome

The Mickey Moniak and J.P. Crawford situation continues to just be bizarre as both return to about where they should be. If anything it is a large lesson in small sample size data and what things we actually care about. The other bizarre thing is the fall of Jorge Alfaro. Alfaro certainly struggled in AAA, and he didn’t walk in the majors. However, major league catches continue to not be able to hit, and Alfaro acquitted himself perfectly fine in the majors. There are certainly risks with Alfaro, but I also think there is a lot of fatigue. This will be his 8th BA Prospect Handbook, and outside of after his first season, he has always been a top 10 prospect. Alfaro won’t turn 25 until June, so he isn’t ancient yet either.

The other puzzling one for me is JoJo Romero jumping to 6. Romero had a really really good year, but to me his profile is more #4 starter, but I will be happy to be wrong.

Now for some quick thoughts about the list, the chat, and the system:

  • Adonis Medina is the #2 pitching prospect in the system, and I don’t think there is any debate.
  • How high you are on Seranthony Dominguez depends on whether he can be healthy, and can be a starter, but talent wise he might be the #2 pitcher.
  • There is starting to be some erosion of the “Jhailyn Ortiz is a first baseman” truth. The dude can play right field, maybe not forever, but the Phillies will deal with it then.
  • Adam Haseley and Mickey Moniak both got poor reports. Haseley has excuses, Moniak does not, both have talent, but look really ordinary.
  • Francisco Morales is going to get some helium.
  • I like Gamboa and Brito more than Badler, I am not the high man on Daniel Brito (I might be on Gamboa).
  • Jonathan Guzman might be getting lost in the shuffle, same with Simon Muzziotti.
  • Badler is really down on Dylan Cozens, which is to be expected.
  • Ranger Suarez suffers from being worse than JoJo Romero, and that is about it.
  • Badler likes Phillies J2 signing Victor Vargas.
  • I don’t know what to do with Jose Taveras because the results are much better than the stuff, I will probably be the low guy on him again.
  • The system is crazy deep and I don’t know how to communicate that before the Top 50 comes out.

The World Series isn’t over, but ranking season has begun, winter is going to be long.
